Permission Troubles
« on: March 28, 2019, 04:08:33 pm »
Hey,

Was wondering if i could get some help with the tweaking program? Not sure if im doing something wrong.

Yesterday i royally screwed up and had done something with my registry in order to fix a separate problem where my gpu was getting its access blocked for not having the right permissions. As a result my computer now lets me do close to nothing. I can click on Google Chrome on the taskbar below, and that works. the start menu doesn't, file explorer doesnt work at all, when i click on the folder icon i am greeted with the error

(Should also mention my headset doesn't receive sound from the PC anymore. Cant fix it due to ont being able to navigate through my settings at all.)

Ive used the tweaking program in safe mode networking enable but to no avail, perhaps im doing something wrong. When i ask the program to repair the registry im greeted with this

It doesn't change from this whatsoever, i've left the PC on for hours and still nothing. My PC aint bad either, yet the CPU usage remains minimal.

(Side note: system restore is out of the option, I swear I had a restore point in the past but the "shadow volume" appears to not be working. Am currently using Windows 10 Pro)

Any advice or help would be greatly appreciated,
Cheers.

I was going to suggest performing a repair install which won't affect your personal stuff or installed programs, but if you can't get Explorer.exe to start, then that is going to be difficult.

From the desktop can you press CTRL ALT DEL and select Task Manager.

Click on File/New Task and check the box to perform the task as an admin then type explorer.exe and press enter to see if Windows/File Explorer opens.

Then I think you are left with the nuclear option of a Reset which will retain your personal stuff but remove all of your installed programs.

The snag with that though is that you need to boot up into the advanced boot options but using pressing SHIFT throughout a Restart isn't an option when your start menu doesn't work.

A way around that is to shut the machine down and restart it then power shut it down when the Windows logo comes up.

Do that another twice and leave it to start on the third go where you should see Preparing to repair your PC.

This will develop into Diagnosing your PC and then you should get the option to select Advanced options.

Click on Troubleshoot and select Reset this PC.

It's just turned midnight here in the UK and I would normally be going to bed.

The reset can take some time but I'll hang around to see how you get on.

It's now turned 01:25 here in the UK and I can't really stop up any longer.

I'll be back on line in 8 or 9hrs time but by then you should hopefully be back in business.

Yeah, so after a long ordeal the computer now has a fresh install and is working fine. Looks like dropping the nuke on the system was the best move after.

Cheers for the help man.
