"Some configurations are hidden or ..."
« on: June 28, 2018, 06:07:11 am »
Hello,
After the last update of my Win 64 Pro version 1803 (private use, login as administrator) I get for some items in the Privacy setting the errormessage: "Some configurations are hidden or controlled by your organization". Some of these items are Diagnostic feedback, Microphone, Accountdata, etc. The modification of these items are greyed-out.
sfc /scannow or DISM show that all is correct.
I have tried with gpedit.msc to change the status of all of these items, however with no result. I have even renewed all the GroupPolicy policy files with no result.
Can anyone shed any light on this?

No, I have not reported this to MS. I have noticed MS to respond on the  internet to similar issues, but it all came down on changing the Group policy using gpedit, which didnot in my case, gave any result at all.

Windows Updates are a law unto themselves and can affect some machines but not others.

Have you tried your restore points back to before it installed if you are talking about the recent KB4284848 and see if you get the same problems after it reinstalls.

For any Windows Update problems though, you should contact MS for which update help problems are free.

Thank you for your respons. Apparently this is not a problem that has been experienced by a lot of other people. I think I will just reinstall the last update, by using the MS Media Creation Tool.

If you already have it then the MCT won't work and just tell that you are up to date.

You would need to uninstall it if it will let you or restore back to before you got it.

I would have phoned them up direct but you take your chances on whether you get someone who knows what they are talking about.

Can you let us know how you get on as someone else may experience it or Google's spiders could pick up your thread for someone searching for a solution.

Phoning MS, in Holland anyway, is not as easy as you might think!!
I will wait for any results and inform you accordingly

Problems with updates are usually free because the problem is down to them.

Not in Holland, apparently. I had contact with MS today. The only way to get in touch with any support emplyee is via a telephone menu. The only option there is payed-for assistance. So far for the private customer service of MS! So, my problem stille exists.

See if you can get a decent response by trying this method - https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/contactus/

Click on the link for Contact support in the browser.

Had a long chat with MS. Much enlightning! A clean reinstall of the last update is now in progress (just as I suspected to be the cure).
Thank you for your assistance, which eventually led to a solution.
As far as I am concerned this session may be considered closed.

Let's see if there is a repeat of the problem caused by the update first.

Apparently you seem have a second sight! After the re-update the same problem occured. Again I contacted MS, only to get the answer: "Wait for all updates to be properly executed and installed. After that your poblem will certainly be solved".
All possible update will be installed by now (24 hours later), but the problem is still there. Have contact MS again. Costs me a tremendous amount of time. I will report later on.

When you get someone who hasn't a clue what to do, you normally get a fob off.

I'm just wondering if a repair install would resolve after first uninstalling the update.

A repair install doesn't affect personal stuff or installed programs.

All updates are default installed during a repair install, although you can opt out of them where they will then install as normal after the install.

If you haven't created Win 10 install media, you can after reading the instructions at https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/software-download/windows10

When you've done that and with the machine started and the install media inserted, open Windows Explorer - This PC and double click on its drive.

This will start the process if using a DVD but will open to its files when using an USB where you would then double click on setup Application.

After the repair install you will end up with a Windows.old folder which contains your previous install.

You can get rid of that with Disk Cleanup by going Start - type disk cleanup and press enter when it comes up.

After the first pass, click on Clean system files where it will find a lot more and give you the option to check the boxes for the update folders.

These will total about 20GB so it may be worth doing a defrag afterwards.

I have downloade a brand-new .iso installation file using the MS Media Recreation tool. After reinstalling the update the difficulties persisted. I had a few long sesions with MS this afternoon, the result being "a known issue". People from MS wil call me tomorrow for futher instructions. I wil report later.

Well, here is the follow-up: after two extensive telcons and a last one hour take-over of my computer, (during which the fiddled around quite a bit), the conclusion was: " Sorry, but your motherboard (Intel DP55WG with i7) is no longer supported by Intel and therefore its drivers do not longer match the present Windows 1803 requirements". As a cure a roll-back to version 1709 was suggested.
This result is quite curious, to say the least, as I have on my computer two redundant Windows 10 systems  installed (to be selected at start-up), both in version 1803. Only one Windows installation shows the mentioned anomalies. Funny, that the other one doesn't seem to bother!
I will wait quitely for a next update, hopeing it will be  automatically mend the problem. We'll wait and see.

Did the tech happen to suggest how you roll back to 1709 and prevent it updating to 1803 ?

You can get earlier version ISOs of Win 10 from http://windowsiso.net/ but it would mean a clean install and disabling Windows Update.

They offered help in going back to version 1709, but I refused, stating I could do it myself. I am most certainly not going back to version 1709, firstly, because I have some doubts as to the real cause of the issue and secondly because I have after all a good functioning other Windows installation on the same computer.
I will leave it as this. I will await coming updates and expect that one day all of a sudden all will be allricht again, as I expect the real cause is some hidden and yet to MS unknown bug.
I thank you for your kind assitance. As far as I am concerned this topic can be closed.

Have you considered a repair install with a Win 10 1803 install disk/USB ?

This won't affect personal stuff or installed programs and getting the updates during the procedure may resolve ?

This is done from within Windows.
