Register Question [SOLVED]
« on: June 16, 2018, 08:50:49 am »
A few years ago I managed to install Silverlight and Adobe Flash Player 11 Activex( I now have 29).  Neither one of them point to a file on C:. Recently I ran Wise Registry Cleaner and CCleaner(which I have used for years) and System Essentials and Tweaking.com.  I expected one of them to clean up the Register as the programs CAN'T be removed from the control panel.  I know that I could use Regedit and find the entries and delete from there, but I wonder why there is no program the realizes the entries don't point to an application.

Adobe Flash Player can be found in Programs and Features but should also have an Adobe folder in C:\Program Files (x86) if using a 64bit system - otherwise it will be in Program Files.

Double clicking on that will expand to any Adobe products you have installed.

Silverlight is bundled with Windows Live Essentials.

MS used to have a Fix it button in an article to uninstall it prior to reinstalling but MS have since withdrawn all Fit its.

To get rid of Silverlight you will now have to uninstall Windows Live Essentials.

However, Windows Live Essentials also includes Windows Live Mail and Windows Live Hotmail - both of which use Silverlight.

If you use either of those emails then you will need to retain Silverlight.

This article lists what Windows Live Essentials included, but you can uninstall Windows Live Essentials then Google for any of the single items to download/install as required.

I was pointed to the following application and it worked perfectly, at least so far.  Cleaned up the Register and cleaned up the "Programs and Features' entry that had identified the issue.

MicrosoftProgram_Install_and_Uninstall.meta.diagcab

I misunderstood your post - thought it was because you couldn't find Silverlight and not an uninstalling problem.

New conditionWorking on an issue with Quicken and Windows 7 I needed to install Net Framework 4.6.1.  During a follow-on examination of the system I discovered Microsoft Silverlight is now in c:\Mats\...\Program Files(x86) with a date of 6/16/2018. Could this be related to installing .NET Framework 4.6.1?
I also cannot get into a CBS log the was created 6/22/2018 and is still active. SFC \Scannow said it found some files it could not fix and I am trying to see what they were?
When I have some time I will run Tweaking.com and see if it can fix them.

There are two ways you can see a condensed version of the CBS log.

Run a cmd prompt as an admin then copy & paste this cmd to the prompt and press enter.

findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%\Logs\CBS\CBS.log > %userprofile%\Desktop\sfcdetails.txt

This will put an icon onto the desktop which when double clicked will open into Notepad with what it could and couldn't repair.

The other is to download an run SFCFix.exe straight after another sfc /scannow which will produce its own report.

http://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details/sfcfix.html

To view the full CBS log, right click on it and select Send to/Documents where you will be able to open it in there.

You can .zip either and attach them to your post.

GREAT RESPONSE.  I looked through the .txt and everything it could not repair were the samples Windows installs and I removed for video, music, etc.
Thanks again.

Will that work if I can't get to the CBS.LOG?

All of what I've posted will get you access to the CBS log.

SFCFix.exe can repair some items that sfc /scannow is unable to but not all.

Not sure about what you have removed and how.

I don't remember how I cleaned them up, but they weren't used so I cleaned them out for the space.  I know it wasn't much, but every little bit helps on a SSD.
I don't have SCFix.exe.  Where can I get it?  What does it do in relation to SCF?

Just click on the link for it in my Reply #5 and select Run on the download.

It needs to be run immediately after a sfc /scannow as the CBS log can be volatile.

I don't know how it does it but there's a brief explanation in the majorgeeks.com link.

EDIT - I'm shooting off for a few hours now but will be back later,

Thank you for all the assistance.  I was able to Install I.E. and my Quicken works again.  Installing Net Framework 4.6.1 seems to have re-installed Silverlight.  I also removed all Windows Updates for 2018. I am using the information in AskWoody to determine what Updates are safe.  There aren't many.

How do you mean that you were able to install IE ?

IE is part of Windows and the nearest you can get to uninstalling/reinstalling is via Programs and Features/Turn Windows features on or off.

The only updates I generally hide are for RDC because I don't use remote desktop and for Telemetry which passes info back to MS.

Not sure about the KB numbers for the RDC ones but a favourite Telemetry of MS to try and install is KB2952664.

I did have KB2952664 installed, but have now removed it also.  Somehow I or Something removed I.E. from those locations.  The application still existed on the C: drive just no pointers.  That is why I tried a reinstall to rebuild what was missing.  It worked.
Tweaking.com seemed to clear up what else was missing.
