Windows Repair v4.0.19 Not loading fully
« on: June 06, 2018, 08:32:03 am »
Hiyo, lovelies,

I've updated to Windows Repair v4.0.19, and am trying to run it on a few machines, yet it can't get past "Loading Windows Variables -- 71%"

My troublemakers are a
  • Dell Precision T5810
  • W10Pro, 64
  • Windows Build 17134.rs4_release.18040-1804
and a
  • Lenovo hot garbage
  • W10Pro, 64
  • Windows Build 17134.rs4_release.18040-1804

I've attempted in a clean boot, in safe mode, after /sfc, after a disc check, all to the same result - 71%.

Both those machines have been cleaned of infections this week using Bitdefender's rescue bootscanner, and are acting just "wrong" enough to bother me, and think I've got some registry hijinks or general corruption happening that WR is my standby for.

I'm out of coffee and ideas. Does anyone know what I can do next?

Hold off on using the repair program on Win 10 Pro as there have been a few complaints about Windows Update not working after running the repair program on that version of Win 10 - but not sure yet whether it is specific to the Pro version - - it doesn't happen on my Win 10 Home.

Can you open a Command Prompt (Admin) and enter these cmds to see what they report.

dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth

sfc /scannow

They will both take a little while to run, but let me know what the sfc /scannow reports.

Ooh. Yes, I'll be holding off then.

Both of the DISM's came back as "The restore operation completed successfully."

The logs for the SFC's are attached.

Thank you so much for your help.

Were both computers infected as the CBS logs appear identical in the duplicate ownership errors.

I think that probably the best course of action for both machines would be to perform a repair install.

This won't affect personal stuff or installed programs.

You will need Win 10 install media for this - either a DVD or an USB which you can create through the MCT after reading the instructions at https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/software-download/windows10

When you have created the install media, open Windows Explorer - This PC - insert the media and double click on its drive.

This will start the process when using a DVD but will open to the files when using an USB, where you would then double click on setup Application.

This takes about 3½hrs on my Win 10 Home version.
