Slow Shutdown on Windows 10 Since the 1709 Update.
« on: January 02, 2018, 08:32:16 am »
Title pretty much says it all. Since this update my shutdown has gone from 40 seconds to 4 minutes or more.

When I tell it to shut down, it goes to the blue screen that says 'shutting down' and flashes a couple of messages about stopping services. At around 14 seconds the monitor turns off but the lights on the computer are still on.  This is the behavior the machine has always had with Windows 10.  Before the update the lights on the computer would go out after another 20 or 25 seconds and I turn off the UPS.  Now, it takes another 3 or 4 minutes for the machine to finish.

Any suggestions on where to look for the problem?

It could be fast start up and/or hibernate.

Go into Power Options - Choose what closing the lid does - Change settings that are currently unavailable and uncheck the boxes for hibernate and then fast startup - Save Changes and see what that's like.

I'd also have a look in Task Manager/Start-up to see what is running in the background when you boot up - I have very little in mine -

Tried all the power options stuff.
Didn't realize my startup things might affect shutdown time, particularly since it all started with 1709.
I'll try disabling startup items and see what happens.

Disabled most of the startup stuff.
No help on shutdown but startup is faster.

Mine shuts down better with fast start up turned off but I've also manually turned hibernate off with this cmd -

powercfg -h off

Not sure if that would help or what 1709 has done to prolong the shutdown.

If it had been because of miscellaneous updates then you would get the wait while updating message came on the screen.

Even Viewer while giving a Diagnostic Performance report on Boot and Shutdown times, it doesn't tell you why it took such and such a time and I doubt if reliability history would be any help as it would probably appear normal.

I suppose you could try a repair install to see if that resolves.
