Will windows repair fix system restore?
« on: September 23, 2012, 09:28:07 pm »
Hi
A while ago I got that fake antivirus virus and managed to remove it,then did a repair
install of XP home and ever since that system restore works but every time I right click
on an application, zip file or Mp3 it adds it to the system volume folder-never did that before,
tried reinstalling system restore using dial-a-fix and  still does the same thing-tried a command
as well to reinstall same thing, the registry must have gotten messed up by that virus and there
may be remnants still there(my antivirus scanners and malwarebytes) show nothing.

Any suggestions? I have system restore turned off and use erunt gui which works fine but just
wondering if you have any ideas?
Thanks
Rod

The system restore is one of the most requests I get to add to the repair program.

The problem is Microsoft has 0 information on what the system restore needs in order to function properly. They dont have a single repair or fix article on it. And I haven't been able to find anything on the net for it.

With that information I cant make a repair. It is very odd that one of the most used things in Windows and they have no info on it.

the inf file I think, anyway maybe look at his site and maybe talk to him?Just
a suggestion

I know I used a microsoft tool once and it did not work(looked for it on my PC)

Yeah I know of the inf tool. XP installed a lot of its things it needed by inf files. SO reinstalling things where easier.

Since vista and 7 MS doesn't use those any more for a lot of things so it no longer works. I may still dig into the old xp inf for it, it would at least give me an idea of what reg keys and files it needs and get me on the right track.

Sounds like there is more that that system restore needs or uses that isnt right.

Thats the pain in the butt part. System restore uses a lot of different parts of the system.

Trust me, I will be looking into it :-D

I have been digging into the system restore on XP and 7. Both are extremely different from one another but I am starting to get some repair info down and would love to have someone with a broken system restore try out some things  :cheesy:

I dont know about that-I dont want anything else to go wrong with my PC as I dont have the money now to get it fixed or but another machine,if it involves the registry maybe as I can back up the strings that you want me to change-my systen restore is not "broken" it does work-the problem I have is any file(exe,zip,Mp3 etc) when I right click on it and choose "proerties" it is added to the current restore point inside the system volume information folder. That should not do this-only files that are moved or deleted should be in there.I think I said before I used the inf file to reinstall but that did not fix the problem.

No it wouldn't hurt anything. But if your restore is working then dont worry about it.

I need to find someone who doesnt have system restore working at all :-)
