Mate - I tried last night to upgrade the base sys drivers - downloaded them, directed the device manager for each to the location - no go.
The driver provider site has an auto upgrade device which I tried - didn't work either.
Windows 8.1 upgrade doesn't work either.
Machine now behaves like it use to - slow to close down - hangs.
Start up can be hung also - but not every time
Trend anti virus still removed - what becomes of this?
Network connection - USB dongle connecting to 4GX mobile phone service - use to be good, now - often hangs after say 10 minutes of use. resolve - restart PC and connect again.
Getting a bit over all this now.
?
Every day upright is a good day

I'm not sure what's causing your broadband problems and I've never used a dongle.

There may or not be a firmware update for it.

Does it also slow in Safe Mode with Networking ?

I think it could be those base sys drivers that are stopping you from upgrading to Win 8.1

When drivers cause problems for upgrading and no updates are available for them, you can right click on them and select Disable and then try the upgrade again.

Event Viewer may have something on the slow boot/shutdown.

If there isn't anything in Errors then expand Applications and System/Microsoft/Windows > scroll down to and expand Diagnostic-Performance/Operation and check what those give.
