Long Start Delay and Crash on first run for day
« on: January 20, 2017, 07:31:20 am »
I was using v2.x of Registry Backup on my Win 7 Ultimate 64bit for over a year with no problems whatsoever.

Now that I upgraded to 3.5.3, I am having two problems:

1) There is now a 10+ second delay before the main UI will appear after I click the desktop icon.

2) After a "successful" backup completes, about 2 seconds later I will get a crash in the uxtheme.dll file and I have to close the app. If I immediately do another backup, the crash will NOT happen. I run the registry backup once a week and this crashing appears to happen each week.

Any ideas whats going on?

Is this a user-supported forum, or does the developer monitor this forum too?

I only use 3.5.3 occasionally from within Windows Repair to back up the registry and haven't had any problems, but I'll pass on your experience to Shane.

I was chatting to him via email earlier but it was for Pepo's problem.

He's otherwise knee deep (or deeper) in developing v4.0 of WR - I'll pass it onto one of the other Admins to see if he has any suggestions, but may get passed back to Shane.

JFI - do you get the same problem when you use the registry back up in WR ?

That's weird - Haven't heard of this one at all and I handle most of the support mail.  That dll is used by Microsoft for skinning things. Is there any error message with the crash?

My gut tells me something else is using that and not playing nicely. Could be a million things but lets try two things first.

1st try and right click on the exe for the registry backup and run as administrator and see if that error persists
2nd reboot to safe mode and see if it will run.

OK, I just did the weekly registry backup with "Run as Admin" enabled in the shortcut and it didn't crash. Lets see if this fix holds up for future runs.

But, it still has that 10-15 second delay from the time I double-click the icon to when the UI appears. I have a fast PC, so this shouldn't happen and it only started happening when I upgraded from 2.x to 3.x.

It still happened.

It still has a 10+ second delay from shortcut click to when UI appears - All my other apps display within 2-3 seconds (like word, etc).

Here is a screen shot of the crash:

Two updates:

1) Just in case this might give someone a hint to the cause of the 10 second delay...

The output path for the backed up files is to a second internal drive that spins down when there is no activity to it.

So, this obviously would be the cause for the startup delay, but the problem is, if I run the app a second time right away (with the drive already spun up), there is stil the 10-15 second delay.

2) Since the crashing is in the uxtheme.dll, I'm thinking it has something to do with the way you are skinning the app's UI - so how can I disable your app from using any skinning API's because this might stop the crashing. It's weird that the crashing only happens *after* the backup completes successfully.

Any help would be appreciated.

(addendum to the post I just did)

Please also keep in mind that *every time* I run the app, it does say "Completed Successfully*.

But then literally 2 seconds later, I get the crash popup message. So, this is a very weird issue.
