Windows 10 takes over 5 minutes to boot
« on: August 02, 2016, 02:00:01 pm »
Hi,
For some reason, over the last two days, my Windows 10 is taking over five minutes to boot. I have run the tweaking windows repair tool twice, but I still have this issue. I have done the repair in safe mode both times. I have also updated tweaking to the latest version.

Can someone help me solve this issue please?

Have you downloaded anything recently ?

Right click on the taskbar and select Task Manager.

If you just get a small window with More details showing in the bottom left corner, then click on it and then on Startup.

This will show you what programs are loaded as you switch on and you can disable anything that shows as Medium or High.

Reboot to see if there's any improvement if that applies.

Right click on the Start button and select Command Prompt (admin) and enter -

powercfg -h off

exit

Then Shutdown

Switch back on after about 20secs then open the Command Prompt (Admin) again and enter

powercfg -h on

exit

Right click on the Start button and select Power Options - Choose what the closing the lid does then on Change settings that are currently unavailable and ensure that Fast Start is checked - Save - Shutdown again for about 20secs then switch back on to see if there's any improvement.

I have the bootmenupolicy set to legacy with Fast Start unchecked so that when mine boots up, I still get the F2 and F12 options on the screen, but it still boots up in 1min 5 secs.

With the bootmenupolicy set to Standard and Fast Start checked it will boot up in 25 - 30secs.

Hi again Boggin,

I followed your instructions, but it did not improve my boot time. I timed it and it took 5 min 45 sec to get to the login screen. There was nothing unusual in the start up. I am at a loss as to what to do to rectify this.

Hi Boggin,

I do not know what happened, but somehow my computer has has a miraculous recovery after a power supply cut. The computer booted up in 20 secs.

That was unusual - I didn't receive any email notifications for your replies after your first one.

That sounds like it's had the equivalent of a cold boot which can sometimes resolve issues - but is a new one on me as a cure for a slow boot.

A cold boot is when you shutdown - remove all sources of power then hold the power button in for about 30 secs and then reconnect the power source(s) and switch back on.

The powercfg command I asked you to perform was to reset the Hiberfil file as it can get bloated and use up to 75% of your RAM on Start up.

It would also switch Fast Start off and then on when Hibernate was re-enabled which can also improve start up times.

To prevent Hibernate from becoming bloated you can also use the command powercfg /h /type reduced and restore it to normal by changing reduced to full

Is there any chance the slow boot could have been caused by installation of the large Windows 10 Anniversary Update that started rolling out on 2nd August?

I hope not - I haven't gotten mine yet, although there is a manual download button when you go to updates and click on Learn more.

I've heard the update takes about an hour, but that may depend upon download speed.

As I've posted before, I'm sticking with W7 until I have to replace my two somewhat elderly computers - it just occured to me that a computer that had just downloaded the large new W10 update might be slow to perform its first subsequent reboot.

No - from the opening post it had been happening for the last two days which is pre-update.

Sounds as if the memory hadn't been clearing.
