error 0x800f0906 The source files could not be downloaded
« on: May 02, 2016, 10:54:31 pm »
Hi,

Dism.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /Restorehealth failed with the error message:
error 0x800f0906
The source files could not be downloaded. Use the "source" option...go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=243077
Alas, I couldn't make out anything from the given link.

I enabled connection to windows updates directly, via gpedit.msc, as sugested here
http://www.eightforums.com/performance-maintenance/48368-restorehealth-error-0x800f0906.html
It didn't help.

Per http://www.thewindowsclub.com/repair-corrupt-windows-image-error-0x800f0906 I also tried this:
elevated cmd
   net stop wuauserv
       cd %systemroot%\SoftwareDistribution
     ren Download Download.old
      net start wuauserv
       net stop bits
       net start bits
       net stop cryptsvc
       cd %systemroot%\system32
       ren catroot2 catroot2old
       net start cryptsvc
        then reboot
No success.

sfc/scannow reported it'd found corrupted files but couldn't fix them.

Of course, I wanted to try Shane's program but couldn't find which repair option to run.

What should I do?
Many thanks,
George

Running SFCFix.exe should show you just what files sfc /scannow is unable to repair and give a more concise report and in some cases can fix them.

http://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details/sfcfix.html

You could also try a Refresh - I assume you are using Win 8.1 ?

SFCFix.exe gave me the same error message as Dism.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /Restorehealth, please find enclosed the screenshot.

Earlier, for another issue, I tried Refresh, it took most of my customization, I have a lot, while it didn't solve my problem.

Yes, I run Windows 8.1, 64 bit.

Have you tried the /restorehealth cmd with your antivirus program disabled or in a clean boot with all start up items and non-MS services unchecked in msconfig ?

I'm reluctant to turn off all protection I'm afraid though I need to. I'm going to try it.

Sometimes an AV program can be responsible for blocking and the safest way to eliminate it normally would be to boot up into Safe Mode with or without Networking.

While you can run a sfc /scannow or a chkdsk /f or /r in that mode, you may also be able to run the /restorehealth cmd as well.

You would need to have Safe Mode with Networking for it to access the store.

If you get a red cross on the WiFi icon then wire up as I believe wireless doesn't work in that mode in Win 8/8.1.

Windows Firewall kicks in when in that mode when a 3rd party AV program is in normal use as that is not loaded or are any other 3rd party applications.

In safe mode restorehealth finished with the same error message.
Bad enough but way worse was to come.

When I tried to reboot in normal mode, I got error 0xc0000225. According to the message winload.exe was missing or erroneous. Enter to retry, F8 for Startup Setting.

Neither Enter nor F8 did anything. The system was completely dead. I had to restore a recovery image.
What on Earth could cause this? Earlier I had run safe mode then normal ode again with no problem.

When it continues to boot up into Safe Mode then go Start (or whatever in Win 8.1) type msconfig and press enter then under the Boot tab uncheck the boxes (if any) under Safe boot then uncheck the Safe boot box - Apply - OK and reboot.

Not sure why that should have hung up though, although it has been known to do so when using the Safe Boot option in WR.

There is also an elevated cmd you can use and that is bcdedit /deletevalue {current} safeboot but looking at this article, more has been going on for some reason -

http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows8_1-update/error-0xc0000225-windows-81-pro-64-bit/46cdeae9-aa32-4c51-9c9b-aa7576545b19?auth=1

I think a Refresh or Reset is looking more like the only options to repair your installation, but when choosing which repair to run in WR, it's best to run the lot and any that don't apply, it will skip over those.

Thank you.
I still seek a miracle for a while, if I can't find any, I resort to refresh.

I'd forgotten that you hadn't run WR - while Shane admits that it can't fix everything, although he's working hard to achieve that - WR may just be the miracle you are looking for.

There is the non-destructive repair install you could also try rather than the final solution of the Refresh or Reset should WR not do it for you.

Yes, I hope Shane's program could help but can't find which repair option to choose. Could you advise?

Do you mean all the options at once?

Yes, not forgetting to work your way through the Options as advised in the program.

The repair programs will run by default unless you uncheck any -

I thought I should only check on the suspicious elements, but then I will try the whole lot. Thanks again.

When I've tried the program out on my Win 7 I've just run the lot and seen the ones for Win 10 skipped by the program.

While some of the repairs may not seem relevant, they perhaps can have an impact on others being successful, but I'm not as deep into the machinations of Windows as Shane is.

Don't forget to run the program a second time after the reboot as recommended.

I've just run WR. Right after that I got the 'blue death', of course that could be an accident. I'll try to find out if my system is repaired or not.

Not necessarily if it gave you a BSOD :D

Download Blue Screen View which will analyse the Memory Dump file and show you what failed.

I don't think that's anything to worry about unless it keeps happening.

You could run WR again to see if it reoccurs and a second run may nail down the repairs of the first, but how is your computer performing now ?

It's been less than an hour. Apart from this blue death I've only experienced difficulty with yahoo mail on Blue Moon browser, it wouldn't load saying that cookies are rejected while other sites obviously with cookies load readily. This might be a separate issue though.

It could be linked.

Open a Command Prompt (Admin) and enter -

netsh winsock reset

exit

then reboot and see if that is available then.

Right after reboot blue death again.
After next reboot everything seems OK, except for yahoo mail in Blue Moon.

Sod it - Boot up into Safe Mode again and use the registry restore option to before you first run WR then use that link I'd posted to guide you through a non-destructive reinstall and that way you won't have to reinstall your programs.

The registry restore has a dropdown to select the earliest back up.
