refuses to boot - Black screen
« on: April 23, 2016, 01:22:49 pm »
Shane
Hi there
I haven't been on here in a long time - My HP Pavilion Dv6 laptop has been going well.
Runs Windows 8 Pro, 32 bit version, all updates current up to a week ago
Couple of weeks ago I was getting an intermittent problem with my wireless connection - error 701
A week ago I ran Tweaking for windows - followed all the guides, incl run in safe mode.
Yesterday, the machine would not boot.
Won't allow SFC
Won't boot in Safe Mode
Won't access a USB recovery stick - which works fine on another Laptop
Pulled the battery - for a cold start

Comes up with a black screen after the three colours windows with words "please wait"
I can access a DOS command screen.
Your thoughts?
regards
Peter

In what mode can you access the cmd prompt ?

If it is in the Windows Recovery Environment you can run a chkdsk c: /f without the machine needing to reboot, but you may have to first enter the cmd bcdedit |find "osdevice" to determine which partition it sees Windows in as it may not always be C: so you would have to change c in the chkdsk cmd to whatever the partition letter is.

This will tell you if you have any KBs in bad sectors.

Three colours coming up could also point to your GPU failing but as you are unable to boot up even into Safe Mode, then it may be your HDD.

If you have access to another machine, you could see if it will boot up with a Paragon Rescue Disk or a Kaspersky Rescue Disk - how are you changing the Boot order to try with the Recovery stick ?

https://www.paragon-software.com/home/rk-free/

The Kaspersky website is down at the moment for maintenance or so it says, but that is more for checking to see if your problem is due to an infection, but is a good test to see if it will boot up with it.

When you boot up with an install disk it will try to find the location of the OS to repair and sometimes it sees it in D: instead of C:

BTW - that 701 error is a hardware problem and not sure if a driver install for that would resolve.

This is a Dell check list you can work your way through but if it is a hardware problem such as the graphics chip, then you would have to take it into a repair shop.

If you are unable to boot up then how do you access the cmd prompt ?

If there aren't any bad sectors reported then it won't be your HDD but the Paragon Rescue Disk has a File Transfer Wizard where you will be able to transfer your files to external media.

Is there any reason why you haven't upgraded to Win 8.1 ?

Just seen your last reply - can you get access to another machine with a working CD/DVD drive to create the Paragon Rescue Disk ?

I get the dos screen from the blue restore screen. If I do the rescue disk, can I use it in USB stick?

The program has its own burner for a disk but can't remember if it also gives the option to put it onto an USB.

I'm off to bed now as it's getting on for 01:00am here in the UK but have a look through that Dell article - resetting the BIOS may help if it isn't a hardware problem.

Okay - let us know how you get on and see if resetting the BIOS does anything for you.

No good so far
Found and loaded the Paragon backup rescue software.
This fails half way through a postmortem backup, saying it has a I/O error - tried 3x times - same result
Found Kaspersky rescue disk 10.
Using the loader required to put it on a USB stick, half way through the load, fails, with message saying cannot find files, missing or locked - tried multiple times.
The machine I'm using to do this Kaspersky rescue load with doesn't have Kaspersky on it -  I wonder if this is the issue? Their site makes no mention of this fact?

Only thing I have yet to try is change BIOS back to previous version
I strongly suspect this whole issue is a virus
And the HP machine with the issues has Kaspersky running on it, and up to date
Also has a Anti -Malware program as well.

I don't have Kaspersky installed on this machine but I was able to boot up with it and it ran a scan on C: - although that took about 9 hours.

The reason I ran it was because nothing else would boot it up.

I was using a restore point and when it hung, against my better judgement - hit the power button and just had a black screen with a big white arrow.

After it had completed, I selected shutdown and went off for a few mins to find a chkdsk running when I came back.

I don't know to this day how that came about but it fixed things for me.

It's possible that the files are being checked by an antivirus program which has them locked, so see if you can create the bootable USB in Safe Mode.

Are you doing this on another machine ?

Yep, I'm trying to make a kaspersky rescue USB stick - you are saying do this on the other laptop with this machine in safe mode?
BTW
Tried to update -access BIOS
went HP site - there is a new BIOS there - March 2016
copied it to a USB as per their instruction - but could not make a rescue disk/bios on the USB ?

I think the BIOS update has to see the machine.

On the other machine where you are trying to create the Kaspersky USB, disconnect from the Internet then disable the antivirus program should that be the cause and then see if you can create the bootable USB.

I was using Norton 360 at the time I created my Kaspersky disk and it went fine.

A bootable USB is no good for me as my older Win 7 laptop doesn't have the capability to boot from USB.

As a trial and if you have any disks, create one of those and see if the disk drive will boot it.

I'm not sure what went wrong with the Paragon Rescue disk.

Do you have Win 8 install media to perform these bootrec cmds to repair the Master Boot Record (MBR) -

http://www.redmondpie.com/how-to-fix-windows-8-mbr-master-boot-record/

Are you using Win 8.0 or Win 8.1 ?

See my first post
Tried Win 8 Pro installation CD
Tried Kaspersky installation CD
Both failed to boot?
Safe mode before in Network mode with virus protection still on - this machine I'm using is a Win7 unit
Feeling rather frustrated - nothing appears to work.
Can I not do anything from DOS - ?
I know the rescue discs are written in Linux - but ??

changed the boot options,
made cd draw first option
then installed original Win8 install disc and re booted
after much delay and going around the blue refresh/repair screen - I took the refresh option.
Of it went, refreshed the PC
much later I have a working desktop - less a lot of programs I had installed - but my files are accessible
wireless card appears to be an issue ?
 guess this can be replaced?
will do a back up asap

The wireless NIC could very well be on the way out with a 701 error, but now that your machine is working, go into Device Manager/View/Show hidden devices and look for any yellow alerts or red crosses.

Expand Network adapters, right click on the wireless one and select Properties where under the General tab will show its status.

Sometimes right clicking the adapter and selecting Uninstall without checking the box to include software and a reboot will reinstate it - but don't check the box to include software as you will have to reinstall the driver from scratch.

I've always used Windows own to create my system images, initially onto DVDs until I bought an external HDD for the job.

The only downside to that is that it overwrites the previous image, so you need to ensure everything is just right before creating the next one.

As well as doing that, I bought another external HDD where I store an earlier image and alternate which HDD I use for the images which recently resolved a problem for me, as the newer image included a problem I wasn't aware of when I made it.

I don't use the Windows Back up schedule as it's only once a month when things really change with the various updates other than a Notepad doc, which I back up onto a Flash stick.

Others use Macrium Reflect but have had problems with that when they've needed it - another 3rd party one is Acronis True Image but I believe that is a paid for program.

The only problem I've ever had with Windows own system image was when I was using DVDs and wanting to restore with the one before last, it didn't want to know for some reason, but since using external HDDs, never had a problem - and it's free.

To restore from an external HDD in Win 7 you need to boot up either into the advanced boot options or with a system repair disk to navigate to the Recovery Environment to select restore from an image I made earlier, but not sure how that is done in Win 8/8.1.
