sound problems XP

I am working on a Dell Dimension 1550. Sound quits and returns after reboot.
Tried to update audio drivers no success. Device Manager is clean.
Ran Tweak. Sound has returned. It may quit again since I rebooted after Tweak.
Any suggestions.

When it stops are there any errors in the event viewer? And is the Windows Audio service still running when the sound stops?
