All sound services have disappeared, even after a re-install
« on: March 24, 2016, 10:40:13 am »
A few weeks go all sound disappeared from my Windows 10 2-in-1 Tabllt: speakers, microphone, system. All the usual fixes have been tried, such as updating / rolling back drivers. Every audio app, such as Groove, report that they cannot play. Microsoft technicians were unable to fix it, via Chat, and suggested I do a fresh re-install, which I only accpted because it was said it would also deal with the November update bug. It solved that, but did nothing for the sound, including not being able to activate Cortana, though search is OK.

I get notifications such as Windows audio End Point Server, at least one of two services isn't running.  The error code from Groove is OxOOd36fa

I would welcome advice on how to get the sound services back

In services.msc can you right click on that one and select Properties then on Dependencies and check that those are started.

I don't know how deep the MS techs went into your system or how you did the reinstall, but using the Upgrade now button will normally get you the latest or near latest build.

To resolve the Groove error, you may have to reinstall the app.

Thanks for your response. The services and their dependencies all appear to be running and automatic. I restarted them anyway, to no effect.
Groove is just one example, everythin else using sound is kaput: VLC, Media Player, Photos and Films, speakers, the webcam, microphone and recording and so on.

I wonder if your antivirus program thinks the audio files are viruses ?

Which AV program are you using ?

I've seen where I think it was AVG had quarantined them but Norton Security doesn't have a quarantine bank, but have you checked to see if audio is restored with Norton disabled ?

I wouldn't have thought it was the codecs, but who knows with Win 10 - see if K-Lite does anything for you.
