regedit has changed appearance.
The menu on the left has changed to
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT       NAME Default  TYPE RegSZ   DATA

I need to restore this to original.
Think I might have clicked on an item in the left menu whefirst opened.

I just want to restore regedit to the default setting.
I did not make any changes or delete anything.
Your help with this would be appreciated.
Thank you.

If your restore points have returned, then you can use them to revert any changes you have made to the registry, but given the length of time you have had this on going problem and if you are using an OEM machine, then I would suggest you back up your personal stuff and factory reset.

Windows has failed to start in Vista.
I am advised to insert installation disc.
My disc is labelled Recovery Disc.
When I insert it it does not change the screen.
Language setting is supposed to come up followed by next.
I am then supposed to press Repair Your Computer.
Is this the wrong disc?
Only other one I have is called
Application and Support Disc Generic.

A little while ago I came across a website where I downloaded a Vista x64 SP2 ISO - thought it may come in handy one day.

http://getintopc.com/softwares/operating-systems/page/10/

I'm not sure if it was the Business version as it is on Page 10 but you can use the eicfg removal tool to make it an universal 64 bit Vista install disk which is what I've done with a Win 7 x64 Pro SP1 ISO.

Just scroll down to the bottom of http://code.kliu.org/misc/winisoutils/ and click on the .zip and open it to extract the files.

Download/Save the Vista ISO if your Vista is the 64 bit version then the eicfg removal tool and when you run it, just point it to perhaps your Downloads folder, click on the Vista ISO then on Open.

I haven't gone through the rest of the ISO site to see if they have a 32 bit version, but if you make a bootable disk from the modified ISO - you could probably use Windows Burner Tool for that to boot up with.

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/windows-usb-dvd-download-tool

You will need to change the Boot order - usually by tapping F12 as you switch on, use the cursor keys to highlight the DVD drive - insert the disk and press enter.

After pressing any key to boot from CD/DVD, in Win 7 I usually get an inverse window with Windows Setup (EMS Enabled) highlighted where I just press enter and then wait for the splash screen to select Repair your Computer.

This may be a Catch22 situation for you if you don't have any restore points to restore with as being one of the recovery options, but you can select Startup Repair which may fix it or select Command Prompt and run the MBR repair cmds as in http://helpdeskgeek.com/how-to/fix-mbr-xp-vista/

Many thanks Boggin.
You sure put a lot of work into that, which I really appreciate.
As it is after midnight I won't get to do anything tonight.
Just as a matter of interest, it does say on the Recovery Disc:
This DVD contains the 32 = bit operating system.
Laptop name and model number  Medion MD96290.
Thanks again.

Then the 64 bit ISO won't be any good for you, but to check which version of Vista you are running - and I would think will work in Vista as it does in Win 7 - go Start - right click on Computer and select Properties where it will give a run down on your system.

You could scroll on from Page 10 in that article to see if it does have an ISO for Vista 32 bit, but I'm not sure where else you would get one from.

Have you tried changing the Boot order to see if that Recovery disk will boot up - being a Recovery disk, it could factory reset your computer with the loss of all of your personal stuff, so back that up first before booting up with the disk as they are designed to factory reset from go without any option  to cancel.

EDIT - just re-reading your other post, as you are supposed to select Repair your Computer, it may not be an OEM Recovery disk - so you should be able to boot up with it and refer to my previous post for the repair steps to try, but I'd still back up your personal stuff first.

You'll have to remind me about "dependency walker"

I don't think Novice did resolve the restore point problem, but now has more serious problems.

Hi, I did advise exporting disabled config if any in the windows registry.
quote:
regedit has changed appearance.
The menu on the left has changed to
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT       NAME Default  TYPE RegSZ   DATA
I do not know, when he got those changes. But by removing if disabled, it would not have happened. Since , it will delete the key , lf malware changed to create disabled config key. He did note about some specific trojan. The specified information on the trojan, could suggest that it will damage the av,mv, and also create some registry hacks. The information  on this trojan, vary from site to site.
Regarding dependency walker, i came to know that the logs while creating profile on the particular application exe, would pinpoint where the error comes. it tries to solve by calling those components or keys , and if it could it solves, otherwise, marking as RED LINE in the bottom box.
For example, i did try and succeeded in some exes. But could not understand the thing from logs it create as it is in alphanumeric , and code like 0x00 keys.
coming to the core point, it takes some dlls for its analysis. Here i have a doubt. The system contain dlls and may be the exe also contains or utilizes this dll to run those applications.  The dependency walker changes in the call of the program dll to execute the program, which other application has also using. or particularly dlls from its own program, i.e., depencency walker. This is where i have the doubt and expressed the moderators to see.
Normally trouble shoot the exe would fix most of the things. If i have a program that it was not executing, it is executing without any thing other than dragging the same to the DW window and create Start Profile by checking. The log we supply in the program profiling, only produces log for the all the operations and errors are shown as RED. The program updates frequently.
The Bottom line is "Check your hardware first if it supports the task you try".

Hi.
Sorry for delay in getting back.
The repair seemed to go well from the Recovery Disc.
However, there were problems afterwards and since.
Ended up being late for work due to events.
On booting up after the repair Services would not load.
Then I ran in to a lot of difficulty trying to install the current round of
Window's updates.
On return home tonight I found that the machine took an eternity to boot
and that 23 instellations failed to load.
Also, am advised that No Audio Output Device is installed.
It is early days yet and I would like to see how it settles down.
It is great to see the machine restored to life as it is a favourite.
Very much appreciate all the help and support I have received.

Hi, Novice,
Still not clear, whether your trouble with system ended or not.
what is installation 23 failed. No mention of those in your earlier posts.

Novice is probably referring to 23 Windows Updates failing to install.

While the drivers could be old, they should be available from the computer support site.

No, not over yet.
Looks like I am going to have to grasp the nettle and either perform a Factory Reset of the
laptop or a clean install of Windows.
I would appeciate opinions as to which should be best.
Factory reset is probably the easiest.
Also, I don't have external back up so I would like to know how best to back up Firefox,
Thunderbird desktop mail and folders, Spamhilator email spam prevention programme,
and Rainlendar events planning programme.
Thanks in advance for recommendations.

You can only do a clean install of Windows if you have an install disk and a valid retail key - the OEM COA sticker key on the computer won't be accepted or will the vendor's generic key and you'll be left with a non-genuine install.

I'm not familiar with those other programs so can't advise you on those.

Thanks Boggin.
I have a Recovery Disc that came with the laptop.
Regarding the backups, I have read that a USB stick might be best of this.
Would that not kisk reinstalling possibly files?
I have never used one so I am not sure how good they are or what size might
be needed for the task.
CD's and DVD's have also been mentioned for downloading to.

I'm sorry, I don't understand the question.
Do you mean what was downloaded, or what options did I get?
I can't remember the options as I was totally focused on Repair.
Most things that were already on seemed to download, although
I have no sound - Speakers are crossed out on desktop with a notice
saying No Audio Output Device is installed - and current Windows updates
appear not to load for some reason.

It was what options did you get.

You cannot reinstall Windows with a system repair disk and I'm trying to ascertain just what is the disk you have.

You'll need to go to your computer support site for your audio drivers if there is no listing for them in Device Manager.

msinfo32 may have a listing for it.

Go Start - type msinfo32 and press enter then expand Components/Sound Device

Look for something like HDAUDIO\FUNC_01&VEN_10EC&DEV_0272&SUBSYS_1179FFB4&REV_1000 which is the driver number.

If it has one then post just the equivalent of 10EC&DEV_0272 as in mine.

That will tell me the vendor and device number and from there I'll be able to locate the driver if your computer support site doesn't have one.

Thanks Boggin.
The disc was called a Recovery Disc.
I did download the sound driver from Medion.
My model no. is Medion MD96290 and MSN is 30006951.
I checked in Device Manager.
There is no yellow flag for sound device - Realtek - and Windows search
says that the best driver for my system is already installed and up to date.
Still there is no sound, still the speakers are crossed out on the desktop
with a message saying No Audio Output Device is installed.
It failed to return after the repair.

That's the problem with terminology - a Recovery disk to me is an OEM Recovery disk that will factory reset the computer, whereas a System Repair disk will give you the repair options just as an install disk will.

If you can remember or boot up with it again to make a note of the procedure you went through, that would help.

This MS article's Fixit may resolve your audio problem. http://windows.microsoft.com/en-gb/windows-vista/why-cant-my-computer-play-sound-after-installing-a-windows-service-pack

I'm going to have to shoot off for a while but will be back later.

The Fix It confirmed that I do not have an active sound device.
It then said Plug In Speakers or headphones for the following devices:
SpeakerRealtek High Definition Audio
Realtek Digital Output.
When I click on the cancelled desktop speaker it says No Audio Output Device Installed.
I am getting no sound at all on streaming video or any video.
Machine is Medion MD96290 MSN 30006951.

The options on the Recovery Disc are:
Install
Repair
Sub Menu:
Startup Repair
System Restore
Windows complete PC Restore
Windows Diagnostic Tool
Command Prompt.
I think that the System Restore is to ceate a restore point.

Hope above helps.
Would appreciate having your views when you get the time.
Have to leave myself now for a while, returning later.
Thanks.

That's an install disk then.

The System Restore option is to restore to a prior time when the computer was working fine.

Normally you would also get an option to restore with s system image you had created earlier, but I don't see that in what you have listed

I'm not sure what the separate Repair option does unless that takes you to the Recovery Environment where you can use either of the other options you have listed.

If the latter is the case, which option did you use ?

It would be a hell of a coincidence if your audio device had given up the ghost following a repair, so I'd still favour a driver problem.

As you have already downloaded the driver for it, perhaps it would be best if you contacted Medion.

https://www.medion.com/gb/service/contact/

There's something else you can check though.

In All Control Panel Items click on Sound and then on your Realtek and select Properties.

You may find another Properties button to click on and then you can check if it is enabled.
