Resource-hogging Windows service makes laptop almost useless.
« on: December 12, 2015, 01:00:20 am »
So pleased at getting a different laptop problem sorted after my first post on here .

I thought I'd post this one which has been a headache for a long time.

W7 Home premium SP1 on a Vaio 64-bit ( i3 4GB RAM )

-------

Most days , within an hour of booting the laptop , a process runs as svchost and uses up to 25 % cpu
and at times , 2.5 GB of RAM.

At first look , it appears to be Application Experience (AeLookupSvc) service , but Process Explorer shows
other associated processes ( see screenshot )
It usually finishes after 5 or 10 minutes , but during that time the laptop is almost unusable.

Killing the process causes a few moments of instability but it often restarts later with a different PID.
I installed Hosts Block recently and that made the problem much worse so I uninstalled it .

Has anyone else seen this issue ? .... Any ideas ?

--------

using Task Manager shows the AeLookupSvc as the resource pig , then going to services shows these :-

IKE and AuthIP IPsec Keying Modules
Background Intelligent transfer service

Computer Browser ( ntsvcs)
Extensible Authentication Protocol

LanmanServer
ProfSvc     User profile service
Task scheduler
SENS   system Event Notification
Shell Hardware detection
Themes
Winmgmt    Windows management instrumentation
wuauserv    Windows Update

under the "group" heading , all are labelled as  ntsvcs

Some additional info.

1] There doesn't appear to be any network traffic when the process is running.

2] I have refused all Win Updates associated with W10 upgrade for the past year
I have disabled telemetry ( eg CEIP ) in Task scheduler

3] Manually killing the problem service when the Win  Update logo is in the toolbar
sometimes causes a second icon to appear next to the first ....

.... just a thought !

Not a bump , just an update ....

Change Windows Update settings to " Never " -> problem disappears

Switch back -> problem returns.

It looks like the OS is trying to " phone home " and report on the state of my system , because I constantly refuse GWX related updates.

But it can't , because I have disabled all MS telemetry related processes in Task Scheduler .

I'm starting to think that I may be the only person seeing this problem , but I know for sure that I'm not the only one who has
taken these steps to avoid the so-called "Upgrade" to W10

That's a new one... although I have my updates set to check for but let me choose... and as far as I know, have never experienced that sort of slow down.

Below are the updates I have hidden for various reasons but most are Win 10 related, but you can run the GWX Control Panel which is very effective in blocking Win 10 trying to sneak onto your machine.

Thanks for your reply Boggin

I already have the GWX control panel , and also various scripts from other forums where current M$ policy update
 is making people angry.

I previously had my Update settings the same as yours , but refused any update that wasn't labelled as "security"
as well as all of the notorious "toxic" GWX  updates  ... they were all hidden .

It's looking like the disabling of M$ Telemetry ( eg CEIP and others ) is what  really "mugged" my system.

It's a work-around for now , at the very least , and I can still turn on W7 updates for " Bork Tuesday " each month,
and on the bonus side I'll get up to 30 hassle-free days each month , when all will be slick and groovy.

FWIW - the word around the campfire is that from now on , there's going to be nothing worthwhile on offer from MS ,
for W7/W8 systems , only new ways of repackaging the dreaded GWX updates ....

"End of Life " for W7 is not far away !

M$ have clearly moved their core business out of software and into data-mining , some time ago .
Note that W10 is described not as an OS , but as a   "platform "  ( which has COMPULSORY updating !!! )

And what does W10 actually offer us ?
Well , we get to sell every aspect of our online personal lives into perpetual whoredom  ....
... but let's look on the bright side !   ....  at least the "Start" button is back !

My regards ,

Jethro

Yes, it looks like MS want to control everyone's computers as well.

MS has however provisioned Win 10 to be set to a metered connection but just for wireless to control the updates as some were maxing out user's allowances which resulted in a lot of complaints, but this cannot be set for a wired connection.
