winssx folder - Good golly, Miss Molly!
« on: October 18, 2015, 02:55:19 pm »
This file is 12.4 GB.  That's Bytes w/ a G!  What the heck is in this folder, and why is it so darned large?!  This can't be right.  Is there some way to get rid of some of these files?  Is "winssx" an abbreviation for Windows Sux?  - Art

In Win 7 you can use Disk Cleanup to trim the WinSxS folder of outdated Windows updates.

Go Start - type disk cleanup - right click on Disk Cleanup and select Run as administrator and let it delete the default items.

When first run this can clean out 2 - 3GB of outdated updates.

I run this after each month's updates which usually cleans out about 200MB but it only found about 90MB after October's.

Thanks, bud.  The Run as Administrator Context Command was no longer available when I tried to run it from the Search Result.  I had to do it in the system32 folder where it resides.  It got about 132 MB.  Groovy!  Do you know why Windows doesn't already know that I am Admin?  There are no other Users but me.  I'm going to use that option more often ... sounds like a good way to get in more trouble.  hehehe  I also noticed that I have 2 instances of Take Ownership in my Context Menu.  Any thoughts on that one?  ... Woah!  I just double-checked.  I see 2 Take Ownerships when I right-click in the Search Results, but only 1 everywhere else.  (Screen shot attached.)  I think I found a bug for Shane, maybe.  Could you verify? - Art

You know, when I opened it up in Photo Viewer.  it was blurry, and Explore too.  But when I opened it in the app that I transformed it with (Serif Draw 4X).  I have done this with success before, I;ll have to go back to review the process again.  Probably tomorrow, 'cause I haven't slept in 26 hours.  - Art

LMAO!  No, but Ill bet he could use some!  I've been spending time kind of starting a sub-forum at FrankForums.  Just getting started ... there's always more to do than you anticipated.  Kind of like how the 'other guy's' job is always easier until ...  - Art

BTW, I STILL haven't looked into image problem that you spoke of.  I guess that I should if it's a possible bug.

You could always use the Snipping Tool and save it as a .png if it doesn't default to that.

You know, Rick -
That's the 1st thing I tried. lol  But with the start menu open, when you click on Snipping Tool, the Start Menu immediately closes.  When you open Snipping Tool 1st, all desktop  is frozen.  So, I used Print Screen to capture the open Start Menu and then cropped it w/ Serif Draw to reduce file size.  Was trying not to show all of my desktop.  No tell what some nefarious scum-bag may glean from it.  - Art

When you have the screen or item that you want and click on Snipping Tool, the start menu will close and you should get the small pop up for the Snipping Tool.

Just right click at the top left of what you want to capture and drag it across and down and when you release the mouse button, the capture will open in a window of its own where you click on File/Save As then give it a name then Save.

BTW - I'm Tom not Rick :)

Anyway, I'm off to roost now as it's getting on for 1.00am here in the UK.

Hi Tom -

Weird, I don't know where I got "Rick" from! lol  Anyway, it is the open Start Menu that I am trying to capture.  Mine immediately closes upon clicking Snipping Tool, or anything else for that matter.  I'll keep trying.  Thanks "TOM", if that IS your real name!     - Art

Yes, Tom is my real name :)

The Start menu will close when anything else is selected anyway - didn't expect what you posted to be in the Start menu though.
