New to Tweaking.com - Windows Repair Free
« on: August 22, 2015, 05:28:48 am »
Hi,

First post. I'm here because my as-new second hand Asus netbook, running Win8, won't do windows updates.  I've already done a fresh reinstall and tried MS's own update repair tool, and got as far as thinking I need the "manual repair" described at https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/kb/971058 (which I'd like to avoid!)

I've downloaded and am running Windows Repair Free (latest standalone; just downloaded). I've got as far as "repair parse points", and fixed a bunch, but every tie I run the check, it finds just one more I repair that, and repeat. I've been round this plop about ten times, and it seems to be a different one each time. The last one has an "original point" in my temporary internet files.

I've dropped out of that check for now, so I can try other things,  but should I be concerned? The pre-scan found no other problems.

Update: After scanning the drive, running a virus checker and all the other recommended steps (apart for a power reboot - the netbook has an internal battery), I ran the repair for Windows Updater in Safe-networking mode, twice.

Once I'd rebooted,  I ran windows update. It announced that it needed to "Install New Windows update software" I gave it the go-ahead - and the progress bar ran for about ten minutes. Windows updater then closed. I ran it again, and got the same message.

I OK'd that also, and it returned error 8024001B (which I later learned is, though scary, just a conflict between updates). I tried again, as it suggested, and WU asked me to restart, which it did, with the usual progress counter. On reboot, my update history showed that "Windows Update Agent 7.8.9200.16924" had been installed. Yay!

So thank you for a tool that's got me out of an awful fix.

I've now found 160+(!)  updates pending, and in the process of downloading them. Fingers crossed!

[Not marked as resolved, as there's a pending question about parse points]

Unfortunately I now have another problem.

After all the Windows 8 updates were done, seemingly without problems, and after making a system restore point, I decided to upgrade to Win8.1, from the app store.

The following to points may or may not be relevant:

  • I expected it to ask me if it could proceed, after downloading, but before installing, so that I could disable AVG anti-virus, but it went straight ahead and installed while AVG was running.
  • It sat at 82% done for at least 3.5 hours. I connected the machine via Ethernet (as recommended elsewhere), went to bed, and it had moved on when I got up this morning. It completed the install with no warnings or error messages

However, I now can't access PC settings or Windows Update.

I ran sfc /scannow, and found no errors.

I have run the fix suggested here,  but got this error:

Quote
C:\WINDOWS\system32>powershell -ExecutionPolicy Unrestricted Add-AppxPackage -Di
sableDevelopmentMode -Register $Env:SystemRoot\ImmersiveControlPanel\AppxManifes

If I run Get-AppxLog -ActivityID 374f5a10-dfd7-0000-5260-4f37d7dfd001 I get a message telling me it's not a recognised command (I paraphrase).

I have seen your Jan 2013 comments on error 0x8007064A, and here, but am not sure whether they are applicable, nor whether or not they are outdated.

I have now been working on this machine for five days, without getting any useful work out of it; you can imagine my stress levels.

Well, I seem to have resolved that, with a change of permissions to the relevant registry item, as decscribed here

And so to the next problem!

I've managed to install all the Windows 8.1 updates, except a .Net update, which failed with Windows Update error 0x80073712, so I tried to run the "DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth" command, per this.

And it stalls at 20%.

Update: I'm being offered an upgrade to Windows 10. Would it solve these problems or simply inherit them? There's no data or software preferences on the machine, to speak of, yet, so a fresh install wouldn't be unacceptable, if it gives that option.

It takes for ever and may stick at 20 percent just let it run till it finishes.

Thank you for that tip. I ran DISM again, in clean boot mode, and, after over three hours, it reached 100% and reported that it had fixed a corruption.

I tried update KB2978041 again, using a downloaded file, and it failed.

I restarted, still in clean boot mode, and re-ran Windows update. Update KB2978041 failed again, with the same error as before, 80073712.

I have a CBS log file, but it's 113 Mb. I also have several "CBSpersistnnnnn" files.
