windows explorer stopped working (windows 7)
« on: May 02, 2015, 02:15:03 am »
hi

i have windows 7 32bits sp1 integral and since several weeks i have a windows explorer (explorer.exe) issue...
for exemple : when i open a folder full of mp3 an play it i have randomly a message "windows explorer stopped working"  and the only option is to close the window,  windows don't crash, only windows explorer and it's only when i work with th open window  ( if i open a window play a file or save a file in this window > random crash, if i open a window play a file, keep window open but change folder > no random crash)...  could you help me

what i've already done :

chkdsk c: /F/R   > ok
sfc /scannow > ok
ram test > ok
windows explorer option reset
windows explorer option change (preview panel off, no thumnails off, explorer.exe in a separate process on)
vcredist 2005, 2008,2010,2012,2013 update and fix (sp1)
complete malware analisys : avast, adwcleaner, malwarebyte, roguekiller, zhpdiag, zhpcleaner, zhpfix > clean
complete system analysis : registry mechanic / tuneup > ok
graphic pilots update : ok
DEP : optOut
installed addons : several are disabled

.NET Framework updates > not done yet

what is the most "soft" of the 33 repair options i can try to fix this issue (with Windows repair)  this is my Work PC i need it and i don't whan to reinstall windows and softwares...
this is not a severe issue, i can live with it, but it's better without it...

note : sorry for my english, i'm french ^_^

hi, Please see this link and update the security update in the resolution para link. If it fixes, ok or let us try other things

- Make sure you make a Backup first with the program first.
- Skip - for the time being - #1-3, 5, 6, 11, 17 and run the program in Safe Mode with Networking.

- Try using another explorer. E.g. Donald Lessau's XYplorer. If the error disappers then Explorer itself is to blame.
- Does it only happen when there's one type of file in a folder ? E.g. *.mp3 files ? Then I would blame the installed (audio-)player.

Most of the time when explorer crashes it is because of a 3rd party program or dll file that is doing it. A lot of things hook into explorer, such as when I have videos and I have explorer set to thumbnails it will use the codec for those file types to pull a preview, so you can see how if one of those 3rd party add ons or programs isnt working right then explorer would crash.

I myself use the k-lite codec pack and install the mega one, it is also really good at finding corrupt codecs installed on the system.

If explorer is crashing when only accessing certain file types, such as MP3s then it sounds like it might simply be a codec problem
