Cant update chipset driver
« on: November 29, 2014, 05:44:39 am »
Hello I'm on windows 7 64 bit just changed from windows vista then suddenly I cannot update any driver or usb devices cannot be detected , I'm stuck with my mouse and keyboard that I have been using since my vista. I tried tweaking.com repair but still every time I tried to update "Intel chipset Sm bus controller" it will always give "access denied". Appreciate your help and solution. Thank you very much.

Prior to upgrading did you run the Win 7 Upgrade Advisor with all external devices plugged in http://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/download/details.aspx?id=20

How did you upgrade from Vista - Upgrade or clean install  and did you create a system image before upgrading with which to revert and reinstall should problems have arisen, like now. http://windows.microsoft.com/en-GB/windows7/help/upgrading-from-windows-vista-to-windows-7#T1=tab01

If your computer is an OEM build then you should go to the computer vendor's support for drivers such as chipset and video etc. and the motherboard support if custom build.

I did a clean install because I lost all of my old files, and I think I didn't do the windows 7 advisor although my mouse and keyboard are still working. Only new devices will not be detected.

And yes I already downloaded and used the software from my manufacturer's website ( Asus) for the driver update from device manager but I always get the same response which is "Access Denied".

Download any one of the drivers again and select Save.

Go to where you have it saved, right click on it and select Properties and under the General tab ensure the Attributes boxes are unchecked and if you have an Unblock option, click on that - Apply - OK.

Under the Security tab ensure you have full permissions for all listed users and then extract the .zip to see if it will install.

I did them already although I'm not sure the special permission is unchecked and I don't know how to check it. I unblocked the files already, tried to install it from the setup files but it says I need admin rights altho I already used admin privilege in compatibility still it says I need admin privilege :(

You could have a look in Event Viewer to see if that has reported what could be causing this, but if this was my computer I would restore it to Vista, either by a full system image I'd created before the upgrade or using the factory reset - run the Win 7 Upgrade Advisor - as in your case as I would have already have run it and if that gives the green light, redo the Win 7 Install using the Upgrade option, using the steps as in the tutorial I have already linked.

If Event Viewer doesn't give anything, then as the problem has followed an upgrade, I would try the install again if you have run Windows Updates and they are up to date.

Hi,
           Did you try this link
          http://www.intel.com/support/chipsets/inf/sb/CS-013541.htm
The Bottom line is "Check your hardware first if it supports the task you try".

Probably best to start again, but run the Win 7 Upgrade Advisor.

Have you utilized the auto drivers download by intel for your system

Try turning off the UAC and rebooting and try the driver install again and let me know if you still get the access denied error.
