Fix start menu

Set where it says no text. How do you fix it back to what it was.

I know that the information for the start menu and what it shows is kept in the registry. So I took a registry snap shot, then changed some settings in the start menu and then took another snap shot and then compared. The registry key that changed was

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\UserAssist\{CEBFF5CD-ACE2-4F4F-9178-9926F41749EA}\Count\HRZR_PGYFRFFVBA

When I looked at the long vaule of that key I could see text of everything that was in the start menu. So I have a feeling that is the key there.

So since I dont know how to fix that I would sya the thing to do is export out the HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\UserAssist

We are exporting it as a backup. Then once you do that delete HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\UserAssist and then reboot. See if the start menu rebuilds itself or not, if anything goes wrong just import the reg file we exported back in

The reason why this might work is I checked the registry of the default account in windows that all new accounts get copied from and that registry key isnt in there, so it is a key that is made after the user logs in, so we should be able to remove it and have it rebuild itself.

Let me know how that goes.

Not sure, try deleting the whole section like I said and reboot, make sure to export out that section first in case you need to put it back

Thanks :-)

As a test to make sure it is in the hkey_current_user and not in hkey_local_machine, make a new user account as a test and log into that account. If the start menu is broken there as well then we need to look at hkey_local_machine

Ok I made a new user and the start was the same it did not fix it. I am running classic shell. Did find in the setting under the tab customiez start menu where it shows all in the start menu and you change the name and the command there. that might give you a clue on that is going on there. If we can find a fix for it then it would be good to add to your reprogram.

AH, you didn't tell me it wasn't the Windows start menu, but instead classic shell (Which I use on my 8.1)

That makes a very big difference :-)

Go to the settings in classic shell, go to customize start menu.

In the list right click on documents and click edit item, There you can set the label :-)

Do that for the other 2 sections as well which is music and pictures.

OK I did some checking and classic shell does pull that info from the registry just like windows does.

Here is the section from my english 8.1 system. Make sure to export out the same folder from yours as a backup.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FolderDescriptions

The apply the regkey I attached and reboot.

Right click on documents in the start menu (The first no text found one) and go to properties. It should open and you will see a restore defaults at the bottom.

Try
a)      Open Windows explorer
b)      In the left panel, locate Library and right click on it
c)       Click “restore default libraries” option

Or

Ah then there is the problem, registry keys for it are missing so it is messing up the start menu since it cant pull the info.

See if this works, maybe it is just set to not be shown.

And found this where it might not be in the registry but actually a file

Odd, I had you put the know registry sections back and also the other stuff.

Try this reg file, this is for documents. In the registry there is a totally separate section where you can control the name of my computer and change it system wide to anything. So I checked and found the regkey for documents as well, lets see if this gets documents to show up correctly.

Dang, I covered all the registry locations I could find. I wonder if it might be a corrupt system file then?

Did you do a sfc /scannow yet?
