Internet Explorer 8 bombs at startup.
« on: July 16, 2014, 07:14:32 pm »
IE7 does the same thing after I downgraded.  I'm getting an "Internet Explorer has stopped working" message with a "Faulting application iexplore.exe, version 7.0.6002.18005, time stamp 0x49e01e78, faulting module Secur32.dll, version 6.0.6002.18541, time stamp 0x4ec3e394, exception code 0xc0000005, fault offset 0x000021dc, process id 0x194c, application start time 0x01cfa1649936ef0a." in the Application log!  Running Vista SP2.

No big deal, as Firefox continues to work great!!

Did you have this problem after you ran my Windows Repair or before? If you did use my Windows Repair which version did you use?

Also does it work if you turn the UAC off?

It's an interesting problem.  It did fail after using the Tweaking program, but I used another program after that, also, both in an update to correct a Windows update error which Mircosoft's "Fix It" program failed to resolve, as it itself recognized and reported.

Will continue to investigate and will update this thread again.  Opera 12 is also being affected but not Firefox.

Thanks!

You may want to use the restore point to revert what WR may have done, but have you tried resetting IE to defaults as this problem is usually caused by add-ons.

To confirm, run IE without add-ons - go Start - All Programs - Accessories - System Tools - Internet Explorer (No Add-ons) and click on the home page icon to browse.

The reason Opera is being affected is because other browsers use aspects of IE and if that's buggy, then it can affect other browsers.

When down/upgrading IE because of problems then it's best to reset it to defaults first so you don't take its problems with you.

I should have mentioned this, also, but IE will not run in "safe" mode, either.  Likewise, running Inetcpl.cpl results in a "Windows host process (Rundll32) has stopped working." with a "Faulting application rundll32.exe, version 6.0.6000.16386, time stamp 0x4549b0e1, faulting module Secur32.dll, version 6.0.6002.18541, time stamp 0x4ec3e394, exception code 0xc0000005, fault offset 0x000021dc, process id 0x2d88, application start time 0x01cfa27ec7b59960." in the Event log.  I have also done a full virus scan using Malwarebytes and the box is clean.

I could also reinstall Vista but it's more fun and educational to try to figure-out what's going on!

As IE is part of Windows, see if running a sfc /scannow or chkdsk /f from the Command Prompt as an admin does anything for you.

The sfc will tell you what has been done in the cbs log and you can read the chkdsk report in Event Viewer.

I would like to find out why it isnt working as well :-)

But try this, grab my Windows Repair v2.8.2 then run the 3 permissions repairs and then the repair IE and see if that helps.

In 2.8.1 I didnt have it taking ownership of the registry permissions and so some files would register correctly. So lets try it again with those 4 repairs selected in v2.8.2

IE7 works in Windows safe mode.  I reset the settings while in safe mode but after booting back into normal mode, no luck -- same error.  Some hope as things are working in safe mode.  I am going to try a "clean boot" here soon and will post the results for that tomorrow.

If it still fails in a clean boot then that will point to your AV or aspects of it such as AVG Secure Search Toolbar if using AVG or you may have picked up a malicious one - so did this occur shortly after downloading anything - in which case your restore points should be able to come to your rescue and have you tried running IE without add-ons ?

Bingo!  I uninstall some "search module" one of my kiddos had downloaded and everything is now running.  Easy to find as I date sorted on program installs.

Thanks!

That sounds like bundled unwanted software that came with another download, so there maybe something else listed with the same date stamp - but glad you were able to find the culprit and thanks for the update.

Ah, so it was a crap add on that was crashing IE.

Good to hear you found the cause :-)
