Prefetch folder will not open

When I click on the prefect folder it will not open. Is there a way to fix this? Running Windows 7 64 bit. Thanks.

What happens when you try to open it?

Are you just double clicking on it? Try right clicking on it and choose open, or in the start menu go to run and put in the path and hit enter and see if it opens that way

See, with a cmd.exe, if the folder has a desktop.ini file in it, if so delete it.

Right click on the folder and go to properties, you will have a security tab.

Odd error. Make sure the UAC is turned off and reboot the system.

I googled that error and seems to be UAC related.

You can also run my Windows repair and uncheck everything except file permission and registry permissions

Check this out. Is seem the fix the of the screen shot I showed you. I copied the registry and made a reg file. and now when I right click on the folder and go to properties, you will have a security tab and click on it, it works. But still can not open the folder.

don't want to revive an old thread but you stated the error message so clearly and I had a similar problem on Windows 8 - number one hit on Google ... so I thought I'd share my findings because this is a nasty error.

I couldn't use "Edit ..." on the security tab where elevation (UAC) was necessary! For folders/files where I already had permissions, and there was no shield on the button, I could edit the perms. In all Edit-with-UAC-needed cases I got the invalid "value" message you stated.

There is a file rshx32.dll in your System32 (and SysWow64 for x64) directory. This file holds the security shell extension, that's just the Tab pages for viewing and changing all security settings. MS even has an old article to hide this by manipulating filesystem permissions: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/193826/en-us

So important part one - make sure that rshx32.dll exists and that the file permissions are appropriate. Check with another server or virtual machine, usually TrustedInstaller is owner in full and Admins/Users/Sys/All Apps have at least read execute.

The problem in my case was Registry-related. You'll find a .reg listing below with further info to get you started for diagnosis. I hope the CLSIDs (GUIDs) do not differ from OS to OS otherwise you'll have to search for "Security Shell Extension" in your Registries of working and non-working systems to find the right ones. But I'm optimistic since the file already existed in NT 4.0 ;-)

In my case mainly the InprocServer32 values of the "Security Shell Extensions" got screwed. First, their type was changed from REG_EXPAND_SZ to REG_SZ. Second, they weren't fully qualified any longer (rshx32.dll instead of %SystemRoot%\System32\rshx32.dll or the localized strings like rshx32.dll,-59 instead of @%systemroot%\system32\rshx32.DLL,-59).

I can't guarantee that the .reg works for all different OS and advise you to investigate and compare keys/values to your system before applying it. At least it should point you in the right direction. "rshx32.dll" and "Security Shell Extension" are the keywords to look out for. If you're after the DCOM permissions, I don't have them in the file and they are most probably OS specific. But the comments list the Registry location of the DCOM sec part.
Don't know if the localization and icon references hold from OS to OS so please check.

Since you had messed up reg keys for the permissions tabs I wonder if there is a regkey that has something to do with reading something in that folder and it isnt letting you open it.

You have to click add, and then add the system account. What is odd though is my Windows repair, reset file permissions should have added those accounts to the security for you, very odd it didnt.

And I attached a screen shot of the properties of my folder, you can see the other tabs. I have never seen a system with the tabs missing so I dont know the regkeys right off hand.

wholy crap I fixed it. I went and added everyone under Group or useer names and that work then saw your screen shot and made it look like that. now I see your new post. It would be great if you can find a way to add this to you program Windows Repair (All in One). Thanks for all the help.

I am curious why the reset file permissions repair didnt add those or if the exe that I use to set permissions was unable to.

So far so good. What we found here should be added to your program. It helped me fix my problem Think add the reg keys first then do the permissions.

Yes I am going to add those keys. In fact I am going to look and try to find even more keys to add. but I have to do it for each version of Windows AND only do keys that are the same on every style of that version of Windows, as in English and non english and systems where windows installed on the c: drive.

i have to take all those things into account, which is why I dont have so much more in the program yet. To many variables to account for!
