Just had a user post who had a major updating failing on him and he found that it was from another update causing the problem and he found a way to fix it. I want to look into that more and see if it might be what you need as well :-)

Hi Shane.

Sorry I mislead you...the message I got said there were no results found for the  error 8024a000 not the actual download.

I ran your updated repair tool today but it didn't work on my problem.

Despite trying a few times my windows update says 'failed'.

I saw the latest message for you re 'Jadog's fix. I'll wait for you to check it out, it looks above my head at the moment until I study it....about 100 times.

Cheers Shane.
Tom.

Hi Shane.

You knew I was going to have problems...right ?   Me too !

I followed the instructions (I think) and it almost worked. I even ran it twice.

This is what I got in cmd prompt:

Microsoft Windows [Version 6.3.9600]
(c) 2013 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.

C:\WINDOWS\system32>DISM /online /get-packages /format:table | findstr KB2919355

C:\WINDOWS\system32>dism /online /cleanup-image /startcomponentcleanup

Deployment Image Servicing and Management tool
Version: 6.3.9600.16384

Image Version: 6.3.9600.16384

[==========================100.0%==========================]
The operation completed successfully.

C:\WINDOWS\system32>
C:\WINDOWS\system32>

I skipped instruction number 3, was that right ?

I even downloaded the KB from MS and not the one I had saved.

Copying packages to the window update cache, this ran for about 15 minutes.
Then it started to download, this ran for about 30 minutes before reporting "The following updates were not installed....etc"
I let the second attempt run over night but the same results.

"Murphys Law" rules !!!!

Cheers Shane...you are a very patient man.
Tom.

Turns out this update has been a HUGE problem for MS and a LOT of other users.

In fact MS is starting to keep track of it, found this page here, see if it might be of any help to you
http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/c203334f-7ae5-4716-aeb5-0fa3d60da216/kb2919355-issues-being-investigatedtracked?forum=winserver8gen

You can see the number of problems with it.

Turns out for Windows 8.1 people will no longer get updates after may without this update installed, so MS had better do something about the installer for it soon lol

Hi Shane.

About time MS got their heads out of where ever they are.

Interesting page that, by the time I get throught half of them windows 9 will be out of date.

I'll get back to you when I am finished with it....if I live that long.

Cheers Shane.

Hi Shane.

Just thought I would keep you up to speed it may help someone else...or not.

I completed the first part of that page you recommended and as expected...failed.   http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/c203334f-7ae5-4716-aeb5-0fa3d60da216/kb2919355-issues-being-investigatedtracked?forum=winserver8gen

I even completed the install but when I tried to reboot it was back to the usual "Failure configuring etc".

I have asked the lady concerned for further advice.

I'll keep you informed.
Cheers Shane.

Thanks for letting me know. I am really curious to what might be the problem. The update installs and gets all the way to the point when when you reboot it does the final steps of installing the updates but then fails, and of course at that screen you get zero information to work with and any log files are all but cryptic in what they report.

Hi Shane,

Just to baffle you a little further. Last night I tried something strange. I installed  KB2919355 (the big one) which I saved. It did install, but instead of restarting I I shut it down and restarted, nothing happened.

When I restarted I went into control panel/installed updates and it was in there. So I installed the rest of the updates in the order recommended and just shut down and restarted after each one. They all installed except one, not applicable to my pc, but none of them showed in 'installed updates'.

Then I restarted...but the same thing happened again..."Failure configering etc"

Just thought I would confuse you some more.

Cheers Shane.

The update installed fine on my Windows 8.1 system here at home. Of course when I installed 8 I did a install with a 8.1 disk and skipped the god awful upgrade path from 8 to 8.1.

If the problem was happening to me I would be able to dig into it more and see what I can find. But as of right now even MS and all the other people who have had the problem cant find a fix. The fact that there has been different random fixes that work for some and not for others means that it isnt just 1 thing causing the problem but multiple things that can make the update break.

My mom and dad's laptop is stuck on Windows 8 When I tried to update to Windows 8.1 it would install but the control panel was missed up and you could not use it. Would like to have Windows 8.1 update 1 on it. It came with Windows 8 installed on it when they bought it. It is a HP laptop. Even the guys at Staples where they bought it tried and could not get it to work. MS sure did something in the update.

The upgrade from 8 to 8.1 has about a 50% chance of messing something up. It is a horrible update to go through. And I bet because of that upgrade from 8 to 8.1 is causing the problem.

The 8.1 update 1 requires 8.1 of course. Honestly it might be better to get your hands on a 8.1 disk and do a repair install.
http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/26095-repair-install-windows-8-a.html

At least that way the system will be pure 8.1 and you might have a much better chance of getting the update to work.

In fact, I wonder if all the people who have had trouble with the update did the 8 to 8.1 path first.

Good news! Kinda lol

My Windows 8.1 test machine in vmware is failing on the big update 1. So now that I have a machine to look at with it failing I will spend some time and see if I can trace down what the problem is and maybe add a fix to the program :-)

Ok well I didnt get far at finding the cause.

Once the updated failed I ran my newest WR 2.6.3 and selected every single repair, and had it set to auto reboot. I did that and when it rebooted I had it download the updates. This time it had updates show before the update 1. They all installed, I rebooted and then update 1 showed up and it installed fine!

What the crap lol. Also after the update 1 I grabbed the pending.xml file from the winsxs folder, it was over 40 MB in size. That update one is bigger and does more than most service packs. Why on earth did they not call it service pack 1?

Hi Shane...it's me, your worst nightmare, just when you thought I had gone away !!!

Today I finally threw in the towel and took my pc to a shop. He returned every thing to factory settings and it worked. No problems with 'that' or any other  downloads.

As I had already done two 'system restores' I didn't have much on it anyway.

A big thanks to you and everyone who contributed to my attempts. In a way it was enjoyable...going places and doing things I would never have done.

That does not mean I enjoyed the "deafening" silence from MS...they should be congratulated for making the biggest mess since the invention of PC's.

Thank you Shane. I look forward to reading and seeing if you can solve that problem.

Cheers,
Tom.

I am working on v2.7.0 right now actually.

The current version of my program, when it sets permissions is only able to access 32 bit locations and not the 64bit locations. So permissions dont get set in those areas. I have completely redid the permissions repairs and use a new exe, setacl.exe to set them, which it has a 64 bit version. So now all locations will get the permissions set :-)

Lets hope this might help with the update problem.
