Running Dos app in Win 8
« on: March 02, 2014, 06:54:23 pm »
My new installation of Win 8 x64 wont let me run my Q&A DOS program. I set it up correctly years ago in Vista, upgraded to Win 7 and 8 with no issues. I have attached the Widows PIF setup image from the x86 setup. How do I do this in x64?

Any 32 bit file or program that needs access to the system32 folder on a 64bit machine will point to Windows\SysWOW64 instead

I have no clue without seeing it. Every dos program is different and what it needs will matter on if it will work or not.

DOS programs are getting harder and harder to run on newer versions of Windows as MS got rid of dos a long time ago and now it is just emulated.

You could also try right clicking on the dos program and going to properties and running it in compatibility mode to see if ti helps

I thought you could help me set up a PIF file for x64, see the image of my setup on x86. I do not remember how I did my original PIF setup. I assume I need a similar PIF file for x64. BTW, compatibily changes did nothing.

I already told you the folder to change it to for 64 bit.

Change the path in the properties you showed me and change system32 to SysWOW64

Sorry for my ignorance, I get the path. I do not know how to create a new PIF file!

Looks like Windows 8 doesnt support pifs any more as they got rid of the 16 bit system it looks like.

I found this
http://superuser.com/questions/665750/shortcut-to-ms-dos-program-pif

The answer shows how one guy was able to get it to work, looks like by a bat file instead.
