Oh what a shame!  As so much info came up I thought it would be OK.

I actually kept the laptop switched on, so I will start transferring the files onto a flash drive and get them onto my PC.

Given my lack of knowledge IT wise will I be able to buy and install a new hard drive (without driving someone like you mad)? I have had the laptop since 2009 and as support for XP is ceasing this April, maybe I should just replace it. :undecided:

Bye for now

Gill

Putting in a new drive isnt hard. And you would just need to install windows, which again isnt too hard :-)

So it is up to you. I just need to know the make and model of the laptop, so I can see if the hard drive is a ide or sata drive and then I can give you a newegg link where you can get a new 5 year warranty drive for around $60 or $70. :-)

It's an ACER TravelMate 5320 (purchased in the UK late 2009) It came preinstalled with Windows Vista with an option to rollback to XP, which I did as Vista was getting trashed in the press and I knew XP.

Out of interest - would the 5 year guarantee cover issues like this and be world wide? The reason I ask is I live in Spain and they are really bad with honouring guarantees. Most of the time you get a shrug and pouty face if you try to return or replace anything faulty!

The warranty comes from western digital so I dont know.

The specs on your current drive is it is 120 GB and only 5400 RPM

This drive, if you can find one locally is 7200 RPM (Faster drive) and has a better warranty.

I shall have a look and see what's around. I need to go to Barcelona next week, so should be able to get something there. Thanks ever so much for all your help - it's brilliant that you help people like me who really just use IT, but don't understand how it actually works. Maybe I should do some courses! :cheesy:

Kind regards

Gill
