Hello all,

First things first, here is my setup:
Windows 7 Ultimate 32bit
Core 2 Duo Lenovo desktop
Broadcom NetXtreme Gigabit Adapter (built-in)
D-Link DIR-655 router connecting 3 other computers (1 wireless)
1 Roku, and 1 wireless printer



Now, the problem:
I cannot access the internet from this computer only. All other computers and devices work okay.
I tried to install a ramdisk on the computer and when it did not work, i uninstalled it and somehow killed internet access.

I can see everything in the network, I can rdp to the other machines. I just can't access the internet.

I have tried many suggestions, none have worked:
--reset everything -- modem, router, computers
--uninstalled the adapter
--rebuilt the TCP stack
--added Hex address to adapter settings
--tried to add routes to router setup

I've run the all-in-one program three times to no avail.
Windows actually reports that I have access, looking at the icon in the task tray (no red x or yellow exclamation point).
Ping will get the address of a website but packet loss is always 100%.

I'm hoping someone can help me out of this, my last option is to re-install and I really don't want to do that.

Hi,Just a thought,have you tried a system restore to before you installed the ram disk,if it works could save
a lot of time, if not you can undo it,so nothing lost.

Problem isnt the router as other deivces connect just fine.

Lets find out if it is simply a DNS problem.

Open a cmd.exe window and do 2 pings.

1. Ping 8.8.8.8
2. Ping google.com

Let me know the results of both :wink:

Hello Shane,

After every solution I listed, I tried google.com and yahoo.com.
I tried 8.8.8.8 too and it still does not work.

And to Wolverine, yes I tried a restore after some of the solutions in the list didn't work.
It also did not work.

I didn't know Windows only keeps so many restore points -- one of my ideas was to restore to a month before but when I looked at what I had it was all from the prior week, so that idea went out the door.

Hi,
Windows will normally keep restore points for months,so you may have system problems other than
the issue you posted.Have you run the file checker lately?Might be related to internet issues as well,
have you checked for virus,ie running Malwarebytes in safe mode?

Ok good, I can cross that off the list, was making sure it wasnt DNS related :-)

Ok now in the cmd window do

ipconfig /all

And post a screen shot showing the local Ip info and all that good stuff. Also what is the local Ip of the router?

Wolverine, it's not a virus the system is clean. I run malwarebytes regularly as well as several other malware programs.

Hello,

Dunno if it can help you, can you open the prompt and write:

netsh int ip reset c:\resetlog.txt

then :

netsh winsock reset all

Reboot after (it will ask you too).

If it's still not working can you try a tracert on 8.8.8.8 ?

One way to find out if the problem is with the router for some odd reason or something with the system is to try a different connection.

Is there anyway you might be able to try the computer behind a different router?

If it works behind another router then we know to look at the router for the problem. If it still fails then we know it is something with the system itself :wink:

At least this way we know where to focus.

It's not the router. It is the IPv6 setup.
Even though I don't use it, somehow it is necessary for the internet to work.

I enabled it on the adapter and then tried to view the properties and got the message:

"In order to configure TCP/IP, you must install or enable a network adapter card"


I don't get this message on any of the other machines when I try to view IPv6 properties.
IPv6 can't see the card and/or is sending bad packets somehow.

I've already done the IPv6 reset. What else is there to do?

Remember the adapter is fine -- I can connect to other machines on my home network.

Odd, you shouldn't need ipv6 to get on the net unless your ISP is forcing that.

But if IPv6 is required (First time I have seen it required so far) and IPv6 isnt working on your system then that would explain the problem. And it can access to the local computers by IPv4.

Go to the network adapter and right click on it and go to properties and get a screen shot for me so I can compare it with mine. You will see on mine I have ipv6 disabled.

I actually searched the error out on the web and came across a solution -- it got rid of the error message I was seeing but it did not restore internet connectivity. So still looking for a solution.

What is the network enhancer? I haven't seen that before.

Any time I see anything like enhancer or something I always find that things that mess with the network are normally the cause :wink:

I am not thrilled about removing it mainly because once I do, reinstalling it is really a pain.
I did some testing in safe mode -- even there I have no internet access.
I disabled the Deterministic Driver, IPv6 and the QoS Packet Scheduler and nothing changed.

Shane, great news  :smiley: -- I now have internet access restored on my computer.
You were right, the Deterministic driver did have something to do with it. Somehow it modifies the network driver such that all internet requests go thru it even when I am not connected to the VPN.

Here is a detailed breakdown of what I did.

During my search for a resolution, I came across dozens of sites with solutions, but none of them worked.
One of the things I read in passing was go into safe mode to execute some of the network commands -- that I had not done as I didn't think it would make a difference. But it should be done because that way you are only dealing with the minimum number of drivers to give you basic functionally. After the post about removing the VPN, I thought maybe I should try network access in safe mode - maybe networking will work because the VPN driver is a supplemental driver and the system will not load it. That test failed -- no internet access even in safe mode (but the icon in the system tray says i do). I disabled the driver, same result: failure.

So what do I do now? I don't want to uninstall the VPN software because as I said it is a pain to reinstall.
One of the sites I ran across while trying to resolve this suggested a list of netsh commands -- many of which I had already executed with no resolution.

Here is the website:

As I stated above, many of the commands listed I had already tried and they did not work (probably because I was not in safe mode). But I think the two that did work are:
netsh int httpstunnel reset all
netsh int portproxy reset all

I rebooted my machine back into safe mode and tried to ping 8.8.8.8 and it worked -- I was  :shocked:
I pinged at least three other sites and they all came back positive.

I rebooted my machine into normal mode and tried the pings again and they all succeeded.
I re-enabled the VPN driver and tried the pings again and they all succeeded again.
I started Firefox and restored my previous sessions and all the windows and tabs came up.  :smiley:
I started the VPN software and logged into work -- success. :smiley:

I don't know what these two commands do

netsh int httpstunnel reset all
netsh int portproxy reset all

but they had some effect on the VPN driver and cleared up whatever the problem was.

And a thank you to jayesh mewada as well -- his blog post contains the solution for my internet/VPN issue but I don't think that was the intent.

My Christmas will be much better now, because I don't have to spend any part of it rebuilding my computer.

Good to hear you got it working :-D

I am also going to double check and see if I have those commands in my winsock repair in the windows repair tool and if they arent I will be adding them  :wink:
